Energy poverty, housing and health: the lived experience of older low-income Australians

Energy poverty (EP) is the product of three main factors – cost energy, household income and energy efficiency dwelling. Climate change rising costs are likely to accentuate EP. This study extends our knowledge about EP in Australia examines its relationship housing health. Drawing on 23 semi-structured interviews, we map impacts older low-income people residing Sydney Melbourne. These include food insecurity, an incapacity purchase essential consumer items, inability afford required medical procedures, thermal discomfort social exclusion. We found that many interviewees do not recognize their own situation or too ashamed ask for help. Thus, overall individuals broader society can be far higher than what statistics indicate.
